The biggest college basketball season this century & my Preseason A.P. Ballot
October 26, 2011

Spotlight meet college hoops. You say you’ve met? But it’s been a while? Then its time for a mixer.

With the NBA in lockout mode and nowhere near the resumption of activities, basketball fans have but one choice. But is college basketball ready for all the attention?

More so than in years.

The reason for dwindling quality of and therefore shrinking attention to NCAA basketball has come largely to the disappearance, or only brief appearance, of stars. The one and done rule that gives you John Wall for just one season makes it tough for fans to develop a real relationship. Sure, the quickie has its attraction, but nothing you want to right home about.

This season Jared Sullinger at Ohio State, Harrison Barnes at UNC and Connecticut’s Jeremy Lamb all returned for sophomore seasons. They provide unquestioned star power.

Sure some left, and no departure more paralyzed a program than Jordan Williams leaving of College Park. I’d bet a year of John Calipari’s salary that Gary Williams remains head coach at Maryland if Williams had returned.

But while they may struggle at Comcast Center, the collective level of talent across the nation is the best we’ve seen in years. And the blue bloods, per usual, lead the way. However, we know the Butlers and St. Marys and Northern Iowas will have their say too. Can’t wait for the beautiful ride.

Here’s my preseason ballot plus preseason All America team. Feel free to remind me of how badly I prognosticated come March.
